GARDEN VERSE - Give A Man by Arthur Young

"Give a man secure possession of a bleak rock, and he will turn it into a garden; give him nine years’ lease of a garden, and he will convert it into a desert."

GARDEN VERSE - Digging

Digging

To-day I think
Only with scents, - scents dead leaves yield,
And bracken, and wild carrot’s seed,
And the square mustard field;

Odours that rise
When the spade wounds the root of tree,
Rose, currant, raspberry, or goutweed,
Rhubarb or celery;

The smoke’s smell, too,
Flowing from where a bonfire burns
The dead, the waste, the dangerous,
And all to sweetness turns.

It is enough
To smell, to crumble the dark earth,
While the robin sings over again
Sad songs of Autumn mirth.

GARDEN VERSE - If You Wish To Be Happy

“If you wish to be happy for a day, get drunk;
If you wish to be happy for a week, kill a pig;
If you wish to be happy for a month, get married;
If you wish to be happy for ever and ever, make a garden.”

GARDEN VERSE - Adam, The First Gardener

A verse by Rudyard Kipling about Adam, the first gardener.

Oh,  Adam was a gardener, and God who made him sees
That half a proper gardener’s work is done upon his knees,
So when your work is finished, you can wash your hands and pray
For the Glory of the Garden that it may not pass away!

Like A Rose

You, a friend, are like a rose. There may be some thorns, A little mildew at times. But your inner sweetness glows, And your smile ...
